State Archivist: SNCF Archives Might Not Be Enough

French railway giant SNCF — whose Maryland affiliate is vying for a large state contract — may still not be complying with state law, despite finally making digital copies of its World War II archives available to researchers and museums this week, according to the state’s top archivist.

“I can say that the newspaper announcement of making images available at the museum in France is not sufficient to comply with the law,” Maryland State Archivist Dr. Edward C. Papenfuse told the Baltimore Jewish Times this week. …

Said Del. Samuel I. “Sandy” Rosenberg (D-41st), who led the effort to pass Maryland’s bill in the House of Delegates bill last year: “There’s a reasonable assumption that they are making these records available in order to comply with the law to bid on the contract.” …

When it comes to SNCF, he said, “They say in their press release that this is a proactive policy on their part. Perhaps it loses something in the translation from French. What matters is not who gets credit, but that the records are available to the public and the survivors and the researchers who can then learn about what happened and prevent something like this from ever happening again.”
