Cosponsor HR 1193, the Holocaust Rail Justice Act

It is with a renewed sense of urgency that we ask you to become a cosponsor of legislation that will grant Holocaust survivors their long-awaited and much deserved day in court.

“On January 25th, 2011, an SNCF representative told me, in no uncertain terms, that ‘SNCF will never pay the survivors anything’ and that that [sic] the company ‘would rather not do business in California’ than take any such actions. … Rather than finally take responsibility for its role in the Holocaust and in the death of tens of thousands of people, and to finally pay the reparations it owes its victims, it appears SNCF has decided to do just the opposite. This type of conduct, especially by a company seeking to do business with the State of California, is shocking and alarming.”
“The governor has dealt a devastating blow to the last remaining survivors and families of victims who were transported to unimaginable horrors at World War II concentration camps by a company that now seeks to make a fortune on California’s high speed rail system. The company, SNCF, has not taken responsibility for its participation in the mass genocide of 74,000 Jews and others it took by train against their will to the death camps during the Holocaust. Until or unless it does, they do not deserve our trust or our tax dollars.”
“I hope that SNCF’s willingness to open the archives represents the first of many similar steps to ensure SNCF meets its responsibility to the victims and their families and also the responsibility that is demanded by California taxpayers.”

“The nightmare of the concentration camps has haunted the survivors across country and across time. Now the very train company that transported them to the death camps is primed to build a rail line in California – for some, in their own community. At the very least, the company should be asked to take responsibility for its past actions – something they have not done in the decades since the events took place.”
